<p>Stress is one of three aspects of rhythm in speaking. The other two are linking and intonation. After learning the sounds in a language, you also need to know the stresses, linking rules and intonation of that language.</p>
<p>Stress is of two kinds, the syllable stress and the sentence stress. These are but general rules on how to stress words in the English language. However, they are not absolute rules. It means that there are some words that do not follow these rules. Thus, in order for you to really master how words and sentences are stressed, you need to listen to how native speakers use the language. Yet, these general rules are very useful in understanding the language and helping non-native speakers understand how words and sentences are formed in using the English language.</p>
<p><strong>Syllable Stress</strong></p>
<p>This is mainly concerned with how syllables in a word should be given emphasis, that is, which syllables should be emphasized and which syllables should not be emphasized. This is divided into three; part of speech, category and/or suffixes.</p>

<p><strong>Stress Within the Sentence</strong></p>
<p>Sentence stresses depend on the words used in sentences. These words are divided into two. The CONTENT words and the FUNCTION words.</p>
<p>Content words are the words in the sentence that carry information, thus valuable in the whole construction in the sentence. Function words are the words that just serve some roles in the whole sentence construction and really do not give any additional information in the sentence.</p>

<p><strong>Rhythm</strong></p>
<p>Rhythm is the way on how stressed and unstressed syllables are stressed in regular intervals, with the stress falling on content words. The question is how do you show emphasis on content words?</p>

<li>Pitch change</li>
<li>Volume: stressed words are said      louder</li>
<li>Length: stressed words are said      longer</li>
</ul>
<p>Remember this: Stressed syllables occur on regular, evenly-spaced beats even if there is more than one unstressed syllables between them. Thus, in this case, you need to say the unstressed syllables in between faster, as not to disrupt the rhythm.</p>

<p>How does one make unstressed word less emphasized? Here are some of the methods that you can use:</p>

<li>Say them more faster and more      quietly</li>
<li>Change the vowels sound to      schwa</li>
<li>Create common contractions</li>
<li>Create informal contractions</li>
<li>Omit sounds fro the beginning      of words</li>
